Retention of Agr in infant skin is related to atopic dermatitis. In a Japanese cohort study, S. aureus colonization at 1 month old did not affect the development of AD at 1 year old. However, possessing S. aureus on skin at 6 months old substantially increases the risk of developing AD at 1 year old. The whole-genome sequencing revealed that S. aureus on skin of the infants who did not develop AD by the age of one year acquired loss-of-function mutations in the agr locus between one and six months of age, whereas retention of a functional Agr is crucial for S. aureus to colonize the infants’ skin and cause AD.
