Table 1 The classification of PLA2 family. sPLA2, cPLA2, and iPLA2/PNPLA are the original big three among the PLA2 family. The sPLA2 family contains 10 catalytically active isoforms (IB, IIA, IIC, IID, IIE, IIF, III, V, X, XIIA) and 1 inactive isoform (XIIB) in mammals. The cPLA2 family comprises 6 isoforms (α-ζ). The human genome encodes 9 iPLA2 enzymes. These enzymes are now more generally referred to as PNPLA (1–9).
