Schema of corneal endothelium development. Neural crest cells begin to migrate from neural plate border with the endothelial-mesenchymal transition and reach periocular lesion. Next, neural crest cells (or periocular mesenchymal cells) migrate beneath corneal epithelium and mature to be corneal endothelium. This process is thought as the mesenchymal-endothelial transition
