Cell-cell communication in skeletal muscle regeneration. MuSCs interact with immune cells, such as macrophages, as well as FAPs and vascular ECs to activate, proliferate, and differentiate into myofibers during skeletal muscle regeneration. These interactions are essential for proper skeletal muscle regeneration. Continuous changes in macrophage function are coordinated with the steps of myocyte regeneration. Soon after injury, Ly6Chi cells predominate, which appear to include monocytes and macrophages. However, 2 to 3 days after injury, Ly6Clo macrophages become predominant.
