Fibrinolytic system in hemostasis. Plasminogen is converted by plasminogen activators (tissue-plasminogen activator, t-PA; urokinase-type plasminogen activator, u-PA) to enzymatically active plasmin on the surface fibrin which degrades fibrin, the main component of a thrombus, to fibrin degradation products (FDP). Plasmin is inactivated by its specific inhibitor, α2-antiplasmin (α2-AP), while plasminogen activators are inactivated by plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1)
